Phonsavan - Plain of Jars, Laos

Hello everybody out there!

Hope you are fine and you are happy with your life at that moment! A Few days I finally left Luang Prabang and headed to the Plains of Jar near to Phonsavan.
Luang Prabang was just so amazing. One of the nicest places I have ever seen and by far the relaxed town I was ever allowed to stay in!
What made it that special? It was used to be and it is still the most spiritual area in whole Laos. Buddhism is here absolutely alive. The people are unbelievable friendly, the town is surrounded by two rivers, the mighty Mekong, what is still a very important transport way especially for the Locals.
On the over side is another smaller river, planted with wonderful gardens, what make the old part of the City to a peninsula. There is a Stupa at the highest Point of Luang Prabang, situated at the middle of the Peninsula, from there you have an amazing view, especially while sunset. The night Market is very relaxed and there are a lot of nice things on other: Paintings, Buddhas, Walking Sticks, a lot of scarfs and a lot of other stuff. So I got also to a little shopaholic for a few days and got some very nice stuff I am mostly wearing all the time. I might look really exotic at the moment with my red hat and scarf, mostly a blue or the unavoidable Mr. Coconutyoga shirt, a wooden chain, a chain with the Om and a red sun… And Pete looks special too with another head and his totally own style.
But that`s all good as I am in a very nice mood…
But back to Luang Prabang: We still spend time with Rosie and Nat and all was good instead of Pete`s and my own health. We both had serious problems, mine still continuing…
I had real thoughts about settling down there, that much I liked it and I would have stayed some more days just to wander through the lovely town, visiting some more Wats or just enjoy the friendliness of most of the people.
And there are still a lot of rich tourists around, a lot of them French, as it just to be part of a French colony – I would even say more than Backpackers. And there are running the prices for other tourists and for the tourists, as the prices for the Locals will rise also after a while and the people who benefit of the high prices directly create a gap to the traditional people, like it is happening same time in so many places all over Asia.
But Pete wanted to leave, as he stayed already much longer in Luang Prabang than estimated. And as we had and still have a lot in common about our next targets and about judging the life I wanted to share with him more time. Maybe he is leaving tomorrow and I have to stay, what is okay, as he want so spend as much as time as possible at the 4 thousands lakes in the South. So do I. But now the lungs and the bronchitis is much better, I am again attacked by an stomach virus and a ear infection. Unbelievable! This has to stop very very soon! But what to do?
That can`t change totally my good mood as I still believe I am very lucky to be here at the moment, wonderful places behind and in front of me. Sometimes it is just getting too much and then my body has to stop me as my mind is ready to continue even if the mind is tired. But this is hard to explain any more after such a long time away.
Very inspiring was the book I just finished: Carlos Castaneda: Journey to Ixtlan; one of the most amazing books I was ever able to find. I recommend it! More about it maybe at another place…

The way to Phonsavan was just wonderful: lushly green hills, valleys everywhere, small villages.
We went over some small mountains at an amazing speed of something between 20 and 30 kilometers an hour…
Finally the landscape changed completely in to more plain areas…the plain of jars
We found a nice place to stay and I got tempted to try some Lao-Lao, the traditional whisky and had finally a lot to much after avoiding to drink for at least three weeks. But everything was still in a right order with me but I felt very shitty the next morning, when we started on a tour to visit a bombed village, an unbelievable beautiful waterfall and one of the sites of the Plain of Jars.
I felt horrible, especially when we went to the market at first and I had to smell and see all this meat… But as it was a wonderful trip, with another two people and the uncle of the owner of our guesthouse.
About the silent War in Laos there is almost nothing known. What a shame!
The US military bombed Laos without ever declaring war. Parts of the Ho Chi Minh-Path are in Laos and they Vietnamese tried to hide in Laos. They bombed Laos for 10 years. 2 tons of Bombs per living person in Laos… Bastards!
And the local people had no idea what was going on. They still lived like hundreds or even thousands of years ago and then they got bombed all the time. More bombs than they dropped on Germany… They Locals had to hide in caves and couldn’t get the harvest from their fields, on which they only could work in the night. Just horrible! And when they ended the War against Vietnam finally, they dropped all the Bombs on Laos. The number increased to an unbelievable amount.
And the US politics never apologized or took responsibility for what they did…
So Laos remain to be a third-world country, simply because there are still millions of Cluster-Bombs (what a horrible weapon!!! It has to be banned immediately and forever. There are still in use. Even the NATO used them while fighting in Kosovo… Or ask the Iraqis, Somalis and Afghanis and so on.
When will mankind finally realize that remaining on this path will destroy everybody’s live?
But what to do? It’s on us to spread another consciousness about leading our lives!!!
Anyhow, get informed, even if the facts are horrible and depressing.
After visiting one of these bombed villages we went to a much nicer place.
We trekked to an amazing waterfall, enjoyed lunch and took a bath in the river.
In the end we visited one of the Jars. Nobody knows exact for what they used these big stone monoliths, but most probably it was used as an graveyard. I had this feeling without reading about it before. A wonderful place, from where you have an amazing view over the surrounding hills. I could imagine to get buried there, when it will be time for me to leave this earth.

But back to now!

As I was writing the first part of this blog entry, Pete came back from Lunch and told me, he wouldn’t leave without me. He thanked me for my friendship and so did I. I am happy that I met him and that we already shared more than six weeks together. A really nice person and a good friend I like to keep. For sure it isn’t only always easy between us, as we are both strong characters (to say it in a nice way ;-) ) and we are sharing a lot of time together and then we are sick just too often.
So we will head to the south, starting tomorrow and spend some more time together. Maybe we even head together to South-Vietnam and the Philippines. But let’s see what’s gonna happen…

The second part of the Slide Show will be online also online in a few minutes. Just follow the link for the first one…

All the best for you, take care and I am always happy about Feedback, Comments, Critics or whatever, also possible to send an email to:

Slideshow down

Hello everybody!

I am sorry, to tell you that my Slide Show was removed after uploading it fucking two hours. But what to do? Another lesson in Patience ;-)
So I am still able to make it better... Actually it has already now more than 30 Minutes... Will find a place to upload it quite soon.
In the Moment I am in the Plain of Jars, situated in the northeast of Lao, quite close to the boarders to China and Vietnam. In the east of Laos is Myanmar and Thailand and in the south is Cambodia and Thailand again.
Here you can find Plains with huge stone monoliths and nobody knows what they have been made for. I would say it must be a graveyard, because it has this special atmosphere...
But there are a lot of different theories around.
Hope you are alright and I will update my blog very soon as there are so many impressions right now. Sometimes I think this journey is more than only one life already...
I am also thinking about some portraits of Friends I met on this journey.
Soon I will head to the SOuth of Laos, from where I will enter Cambodia. And then Philippines and Myanmar are waiting for me.
But lets see. I feel still not very well and very tired right now and have more and more the temptation to settle down. But this is not the end. So keep updated.

Yours,

Mr. Coconutyoga

Ko Pha Ngan-Bangkok-Chiang Mai-Luang Prabang

Sawadee Friends and Family,

Hope you are al right out there! Greetings from Heaven...
Finally Christoph and me managed to leave the wonderful jungle retreat on Ko Pha Ngan and we went by Ferry, Bus and overnight train to Bangkok. Unlucky we got an A/C. If I ever find this guy who invented this shit I am going to slap him for being stupid... What to do?
Anyhow it was an interesting experience to be on a train in Thailand and there are no regrets even if the freezer-train (it wasn`t even 8 degrees...) wasn`t good for my health, as a got already a bronchitis what affected my lungs as well very badly. It just had been much to humid in the Jungle at that time...
Arrived in Bangkok we changed our plans to go to Cambodia into going to Laos, what turned out to be a very good decision. There have been to reasons: at first it would be better for Chris, because we could make more out of our time and the second that there have been massive border issues including heavy firefights between Thailand and Cambodia just a few days later.
So we took the train 1 and a half hours later to Chiang Mai in northern Thailand.
We finally ended up to arrive there finally after a total 33 hours Travel. Again. Why like this?
But it was still enjoyable as the landscape was very beatiful. A lot of jungle ones more.
The air-conditioning was again in use and while it was very hot outside it was again fucking cold. On the other I had a lot of nice conversations. At the train station we shared a Tuk-Tuk and arrived with Chester and Pete, from Canada and the Netherlands. We searched together for a guest house and shared a lot of conversation the next day.
And then the first big and nice surprise. I had finally managed to write Pete, my friend from Finland I stayed in Goa with and he actually came the next morning and checked in. Nice, nice surprise, even when I was sure he would be in town. But it wasn`t sure we would meet so early.
The rest of that day I explored the temples of Chiang Mai together with Chris... Nice, nice, nice! After visiting a load of temples we had to drink some beer and ended up in the "probably tyniest Bar in the world - not recommended by lonely planet"...
And that could it be, the smallest one. A tiny Bar and outside six chairs in a narrow lane.
We talked all the time with the owner Lin, a very nice and interesting person. It was a long time ago I actually got drink and it wasn`t that much but it was fun though.
Later one we stayed together at the balcony on our guesthouse and talked and listened to music until late night. I was in a perfect relaxed mood what is still continuing right now. I can deal easily with almost anybody, I feel very very well and I don`t want to be anybody else right now. I am looking very eccentric more and more with my long blonde hair, the crazy hut, a wood chain and a new soon, especially when I am wearing my Coconutyoga Travel Shirt…
There are so many ideas in my head and I am almost sure that I will make one or a few of them come true. Still I love my nomadic life (or let`s say I enjoy it again as travelling isn`t only always fun) and I want to continue it. As I was heading to Laos I will do Cambodia afterwards and then heading most probably to Myanmar before ending my trip on the Philippines or/and Indonesia.
The next day we visited another nice mountain temple what was amazing instead of the loads of tourists. But it was one more step closer to Buddhism. I devoted the candle, the intense stick and the flower and got the blessing from the monk in front of wonderful Buddha statues.
In the evening our journey towards Luang Prabang in Northern Laos started. We went with a minibus to the boarder, where we arrived in the late night. I met a nice woman Ingrid, from Germany as well, born in Romania. We had a nice conversation that also continued the next two days.
After another kindergarten story until arriving at the slow boat on the Mekong (I try to book never again a package tour, it was just not nicely organized, but then again so easy and that’s why attracting a lot of people who just shouldn`t travel to such exotic places, some of them just respectless). But the crowd changed a bit, as I didn`t liked the crowd in Thailand. It was so much special in India. I won`t say they aren`t crazy, especially India attracts a lot of very interesting persons on a search for anything. But still I prefer a more respectful and still finny crowd who care about where they are travelling apart from only sightseeing.
But anyhow. The 2 day-trip on the Mekong turned out to even more beautiful than I had expected it. It was one of the loveliest journey I was driving through. And I enjoy to be on a boat. That`s still the kind of transportation I most love. The mighty Mekong stream, surrounded by green hills, rocks and Mountains - just wonderful.
The overnight stay was kind of disturbing as there was everybody offering weed before offering a room… And there was a police man around. Some people buy there. Just too stupid!
Even seven-year old children offered it… What a shame. The people there must have been a very strange picture of the westerners. A lot of them are arriving drunk, then the drink more and the smoke. They next morning they are leaving to continue the boat ride…
On the second day we met Rosie and Nathalie. I was changing between my place in the back of the boat, where I had the best view and even shared food with the kitchen crew situated there. Taking a lot of pictures and enjoying the landscape.
Arrived finally in Luang Prabang I was happy we could leave the boat, as I had to take antibiotics to try to get the infection out of my system and just had too less sleep since a longer time.
It turned out to be difficult to organize a room, so we ended up walking a little longer with our backpack. The two ladys from England, Rosie and Nathalie joined us. Finally we stopped and Rosie and me tried to find a room. We asked in around 25 guest houses, what have been all full instead of one starting with a price of 35 dollars a night. No way! Finally we found one and haggled the price down.
And here we are in wonderful Luang Prabang. I love Laos already, it was the best start in a country I ever had. Lovely people, amazing temples, green hills everywhere around and some mountains visible from the amazing Stupa on the biggest hill with an wonderful view over the Mekong, another river and the whole surrounding area.
There is a nice night market. I already shopped like hell. The Ladys think I am a Shopaholic, what I denied a t that point. To be honest: I buyed a lot and the right place for that. Still we are in the company of these two wonderful women. I am very grateful how things are turning out and that I am lucky to meet so much lovely people. I really enjoy it and I am happy. I can`t remember a lot of episodes in my life everything was in balance like right now.
Chris has his last full day together so we will head out so have some party. I couldn`t even go out once until now as I feel very tired from the antibiotics and the short nights. Yesterday I even good fever in a disturbing speed. I almost couldn`t walk home. Today we visited a wonderful waterfall, had been swimming in the ponds and enjoyed the scenery.
Pictures will follow soon!
I will probably stay my 4 weeks in Laos and I am looking forward for the nice things to come next while enjoying the present moment.

I wish you all the best and would be very pleased about any kind of message.
If somebody would like to write me a personal mail, here is the chance:
